Craig Wright, the Self-Proclaimed Creator of Bitcoin, Found in Contempt of Court

A man claiming to be the creator of Bitcoin (BTC) has been found in contempt of court in the UK. Australian computer scientist Craig Wright has received a one-year suspended sentence for filing a $1.2 trillion lawsuit against Block, a payments firm.

The judge determined that Wright had violated a previous court order intended to prevent him from initiating further legal actions. The suspended sentence means Wright can avoid jail if he meets specific conditions and refrains from committing another offense. However, the judge acknowledged that Wright is currently residing in Asia and may not be under the court’s jurisdiction.

Earlier this year, a UK judge ruled that there was substantial evidence proving that Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, nor the author of the Bitcoin white paper. This decision came after Wright faced a lawsuit from the nonprofit organization Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA) for filing baseless lawsuits against Bitcoin developers.

In November, COPA accused Wright of violating an injunction by suing Jack Dorsey’s payments firm, Square. The injunction was put in place to prevent Wright from filing lawsuits related to Bitcoin under the pretext of being Satoshi Nakamoto. Following a hearing, Judge James Mellor found Wright guilty of contempt of court and imposed a one-year suspended sentence, dismissing the lawsuit against Block. Wright has stated his intention to appeal the contempt ruling.
