Hackers Begin Transferring $182,000,000 Stolen from Poloniex to Tornado Cash
The cybercriminal responsible for stealing funds from the cryptocurrency exchange Poloniex has begun transferring Ethereum (ETH) to the mixing service Tornado Cash, as reported by the digital asset de-anonymizing platform Arkham. In a series of 20 transactions that took place on Monday and Tuesday, the hacker moved 1126.1 ETH, valued at over $3.4 million, into Tornado Cash. This marks the hacker’s initial foray into the controversial Ethereum-based crypto mixer, which enables users to conceal their digital assets.
The Poloniex hack occurred in early November, resulting in the theft of $56 million worth of ETH, $48 million worth of Tron (TRX), $18 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC), and smaller amounts of various other cryptocurrencies. Despite the exchange, which is owned by Tron founder Justin Sun, offering a 5% white hat bounty, it went unaccepted. The hacker currently holds $181.47 million worth of crypto in their main address, as confirmed by Arkham.
Over the past few months, projects affiliated with Justin Sun have experienced a significant number of attacks. In September, hackers exploited the Sun-associated exchange giant HTX, stealing approximately 4,999 Ethereum valued at $7.9 million, according to the blockchain security firm PeckShield. Subsequently, in November, hackers targeted HTX and Heco Bridge, another Sun-related project used for transferring funds between Ethereum and the energy-saving blockchain Heco Chain, resulting in a combined loss of $100 million, as reported by cybersecurity firm Cyvers. In January, HTX was once again hit by hackers, who launched a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, causing a brief outage. DDoS attacks involve flooding the target website with traffic in an attempt to overwhelm its infrastructure.
