Professor Urges Crypto Firms to Swiftly Adopt Quantum-Resistant Technology in Ripple Research Initiative

A professor of mathematics and cryptography at the University of Trento in Italy has emphasized the need for cryptocurrency firms to prioritize protecting themselves against the potential threat of quantum attacks in the future. Dr. Massimiliano Sala, who is also the head of the Italian Cryptographic Association, warns that quantum computers could easily solve problems that underpin digital signatures, thus compromising the security of crypto assets. He suggests that all classical public-key cryptosystems be replaced with upgraded versions that can withstand quantum attacks, urging projects to begin the transition immediately. While Sala acknowledges that quantum-resistant systems come with tradeoffs such as increased computational demands and larger data sizes, he advises incorporating quantum-safe elements into less critical areas of blockchain systems to avoid compromising network functionality. This warning echoes concerns raised by other experts, including a team of researchers at the University of Sussex who examined the level of quantum computing power that could pose a threat to the Bitcoin blockchain. However, they estimate that Bitcoin should be safe from a quantum attack for now, as current quantum computers have only 50-100 qubits, while their estimate suggests a requirement of 30 million to 300 million physical qubits. It is important for investors to conduct thorough research before engaging in high-risk investments involving Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or digital assets.
