Dutch Court Sentences Tornado Cash Developer Alexey Pertsev to Five Years and Four Months in Prison

Alexey Pertsev, the developer of Tornado Cash, has been sentenced to 64 months in prison for laundering billions of dollars, as stated in a recent press release from a Dutch court. The Oost-Brabant district court in the Netherlands handed down the sentence on Tuesday in relation to Pertsev’s role in creating Tornado Cash, an Ethereum-based coin mixing system that allows users to conceal their digital assets.

The court’s statement highlights that Tornado Cash does not present any obstacles for individuals with criminal assets seeking to launder them. Consequently, the court found the defendant guilty of the money laundering charges brought against him.

Furthermore, the court ruled that the defendant will not have his seized Porsche and cryptocurrency, valued at approximately 1.9 million euros, returned to him.

Pertsev was arrested in the Netherlands in August 2022 following allegations of money laundering. The arrest came shortly after the U.S. Treasury Department prohibited American citizens from using Tornado Cash, citing national security risks. The agency claimed that the North Korean group Lazarus, allegedly responsible for the Axie Infinity bridge attack that resulted in losses exceeding $600 million, utilized Tornado Cash to hide their illicit gains.

Other developers of the crypto mixer, Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, are facing accusations of money laundering and sanctions violations in the United States. Storm is currently out on bail awaiting trial, while Semenov has yet to be apprehended.
