$3.4 Million to be Distributed to Families in Need

A groundbreaking initiative is set to distribute millions of dollars in funding over the next two years as part of a unique guaranteed basic income program. Win, a nonprofit organization that operates homeless shelters in New York City, has launched a program aimed at assisting homeless families with young children. The program involves providing monthly cash payments for a duration of two years, with the goal of helping families transition out of shelters more quickly.

As the largest family shelter and supportive housing provider in New York City, Win manages a portfolio of 450 housing units. The pilot program will be implemented initially in Win’s central Brooklyn shelters. A total of 100 families will be carefully selected to receive $17,000 per year, which will be distributed through monthly cash payments via debit cards. To be eligible for the program, families must have at least one child under the age of two and meet the criteria for shelter assistance.

One of the key aspects of this program is that there are no restrictions on how the funds can be used. Families have the freedom to utilize the money in whatever way they deem most beneficial. Researchers from Vanderbilt University will closely document the impact of the program for a period of five years, providing valuable insights into its effectiveness.

Christine Quinn, the CEO of Win, highlights the significance of the program’s unconditional financial support, stating, “That’s really kind of like the secret sauce – you’re getting this money with no strings attached, but what is attached to it is a statement of belief in you, a statement that we know you’re the quarterback of your family, and you’re going to use this to help your family… That type of commitment, that type of sincerity is rarely bestowed upon homeless mothers.”

The launch of this program comes in the wake of a troubling revelation that New York has the largest homeless population in the United States. According to The New York Times, there were over 100,000 individuals residing in shelters in the city, partially due to a significant influx of migrants. Earlier this year, a controversial pilot program was introduced, providing prepaid credit cards to 500 migrant families. Each recipient receives approximately $350 per month to be used for purchasing food and baby supplies, an amount that surpasses what low-income residents receive through the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), as reported by Newsweek.

Numerous guaranteed income programs have emerged throughout the United States, all aimed at exploring the benefits of providing direct financial aid to individuals facing financial hardships. These initiatives seek to alleviate the challenges of making ends meet and offer an alternative approach to traditional welfare systems.
