New Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Launched in Major US City, Offering $1,300,000 in Opportunities
Austin, Texas, one of the largest cities in the US, is making preparations to distribute $1.3 million to struggling families in need of financial assistance. According to KVUE, the ABC-affiliated news station, this cash will be given to lower-income families with no conditions attached. Although the sign-up process has not yet begun, the city council has approved the program.
This is not the first time that local leaders in Austin have supported a guaranteed income program. In 2022, the city launched its first pilot, providing $1,000 per month for a year to 135 families. Participants in the program reported using the funds for essential needs such as housing, healthcare, and basic necessities. Mary Bogle, a researcher at the Urban Institute, noted that it was fascinating to see how individuals chose to allocate the money, as they displayed intelligence in their spending decisions that surpassed the limitations imposed by existing systems.
In addition to Austin, a separate pilot program has been approved in Harris County, Texas. This program will distribute just over $17 million to 1,928 households. These initiatives are part of a larger trend across the US, where numerous pilot programs are testing the outcomes of providing direct cash assistance to individuals facing financial hardship.
