New York Attorney General: Citibank Continues Allowing Fraudulent Wire Transfers Despite Customer Reports and Account Freeze Requests

New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James, has accused Citibank of failing to take action against fraudulent wire transfers, even when customers report fraud and freeze their accounts. The allegations in James’ lawsuit against the bank have been examined, revealing that Citibank makes no effort to alert other banks about ongoing wire fraud in real time. James claims that Citibank will only attempt to stop fraudulent transfers if customers explicitly ask the bank to contact the receiving financial institutions. She argues that Citibank’s lax security procedures have cost customers millions, as scammers are able to access and withdraw funds even after consumers have reported fraudulent activity. Citibank has dismissed the lawsuit as misguided and has requested its dismissal, stating that it follows the law and that no system can catch every scam every time. James must respond to the dismissal motion by May 17th.
