The Transfer of $90 Trillion in Wealth to Generation Z and Millennials
A new report suggests that the transfer of wealth from baby boomers to their peers is a prime target for taxation, with an estimated $90 trillion expected to be transferred in the US alone. This has sparked a political debate on inheritance taxes, as policymakers grapple with the decision of whether and how to influence the outcome. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has proposed redesigned taxes on inheritance as a means of redistributing wealth and generating federal revenue. However, inheritance taxes are controversial, with critics arguing that they do not address the underlying economic issues and result in double taxation. In the US, inheritances are currently taxed if they exceed $13.61 million.
